Download Time Calculator
Estimate how long a file download may take from file size and connection speed.
Understand the result
Understand the bit-to-byte conversion behind download estimates. Read Mbps vs. MB/s: What's the Difference? For a monthly allowance, estimate total data usage.
What this calculator does
This calculator estimates the ideal download time for a file based on its size and your internet speed. It can help plan game downloads, software updates, backups, videos, and large file transfers.
Inputs and results
File size is the amount of data to download, entered as MB, GB, or TB. Internet speed is the connection speed entered as Mbps or Gbps. The result shows an estimated time and the approximate file size in GB.
Internet speeds are commonly advertised in bits per second, while file sizes are usually shown in bytes. One byte equals eight bits, so the calculator multiplies file size by eight before comparing it with speed.
How the calculation works
The calculator converts the file size to bytes, converts that to bits, then divides by the speed in bits per second. A 1 GB file at 100 Mbps is about 8 billion bits divided by 100 million bits per second, or roughly 80 seconds.
Worked example
A 75 GB game download on a 300 Mbps connection has an ideal time of about 33 minutes 20 seconds. In real life, it may take longer if the download server is busy, Wi-Fi is weak, or other devices are using the connection.
Tips for interpreting results
Treat the result as a best-case estimate. Advertised internet speed may not equal actual download speed. Server limits, Wi-Fi signal, network congestion, router performance, VPNs, and protocol overhead can all slow downloads.
Frequently asked questions
Why can real downloads take longer?
Network overhead, server limits, Wi-Fi conditions, device performance, and other traffic can slow a download.
Is a megabyte the same as a megabit?
No. One byte contains eight bits, so 1 MB is 8 Mb.
Why is my download speed lower than my internet plan?
Plans are often advertised as maximum connection speeds. Real downloads also depend on the source server and local network conditions.
Does this use decimal or binary file sizes?
The calculator uses decimal units, where 1 GB is 1,000 MB.
